No. U.S. citizens with ordinary passports can visit Türkiye for tourism for up to 90 days within any 180-day period without a visa. Make sure your passport is valid for several months beyond your stay (we recommend six months) and has blank pages. Rules can change, so confirm with the Turkish embassy or the U.S. State Department before travel, and apply for an e-visa only on the official evisa.gov.tr site if one is ever required.
April to June and September to October offer pleasant temperatures across the country. Istanbul and Cappadocia are beautiful in spring and fall; coastal resorts such as Bodrum, Antalya and Fethiye are best from May to October. Winters are cold in Cappadocia and Istanbul, but there are fewer crowds, and snow on the fairy chimneys is spectacular.
Ten to twelve days covers a classic trip: 3–4 days in Istanbul, 2–3 in Cappadocia, then Ephesus, Pamukkale or a coastal stop. Domestic flights between Istanbul, Cappadocia and the Aegean or Mediterranean coast save many hours. Adding a Turkish Riviera or Aegean beach stay turns a sightseeing trip into a real holiday.
Flights take off around sunrise and last about an hour, floating above valleys, rock formations and cave towns. Balloons only fly in safe weather, so cancellations do happen. We recommend building in two nights in Cappadocia to allow a backup morning. Book well ahead in peak season, and ask about any restrictions for children, pregnancy or mobility.
Istanbul and the main tourist regions welcome millions of visitors each year, and the biggest risks are petty crimes: pickpocketing, inflated taxi fares, and well-known scams such as shoe-shine offers or invitations to bars with surprise bills. Check the U.S. State Department's current Türkiye advisory, which urges extra caution near the Syrian border. Using official taxis, ride apps or pre-booked transfers avoids most problems.
The Turkish lira is the local currency, and prices change quickly because of inflation, so check current rates. Cards are widely accepted in cities and hotels; carry some lira for bazaars, small restaurants and tips. Restaurants: 10% is customary if service is not included. Pay by card in lira when asked, to avoid poor conversion rates.
Cover shoulders and knees, remove your shoes, and women should carry a light scarf for the head when entering active mosques. Hagia Sophia and other major mosques are working places of worship that can close to visitors around prayer times, so check current hours and ticket rules for your dates. Beachwear is fine on the coast and at resorts.
Turkish food is a highlight: kebabs, meze, fresh seafood, pastries and a famous breakfast spread. Restaurants popular with locals tend to be both delicious and safe. Drink bottled water instead of tap water. Vegetarians eat very well with the rich meze tradition; tell us in advance about allergies and we will pass them on to hotels and guides.
For long distances, domestic flights are fast and affordable. Istanbul has two airports, IST and SAW, a good metro, trams and ferries across the Bosphorus. Private transfers are the easiest for arrivals and day trips. Long-distance buses are comfortable, but travel times are long. Most visitors do not need to drive.
Cave hotels in Cappadocia, a Bosphorus sunset cruise, a private hammam, wine tasting in Aegean villages and relaxing beach days in Bodrum or the Turkish Riviera offer romance with value for money. We design honeymoon itineraries with private guides, special room setups and flexible pacing so you can enjoy it as a couple.
